How to build a reading habit that lasts past January

Everyone starts January aiming at twenty books and turns the goal into guilt by March. The problem is the size and the missing trigger.

Attach the habit to something that already happens

You do not create a new slot from scratch. You attach reading to something you already do every day: breakfast, the commute, the moment you get into bed. Pick one and read there, always.

Example: after getting into bed, before you reach for the phone, four pages. Phone stays out of the bedroom. Reading happens before the scrolling shift.

Absurdly small goal first

Four pages a day. It does not matter if you can do more. The goal is the floor you hit even on a bad day, not the ceiling of good days. A met floor becomes a streak, and a streak becomes an identity: "I am someone who reads."

Cut the friction

The book has to be easier to open than the feed. Leave it open, cover up, on the chair where you sit. If you read on your phone, block the feed during the reading window. Lergate handles that and keeps your day streak.

Mark the day you hit it

An X on a calendar, a tick in the extension, whatever. Watching the chain grow holds the habit better than any reminder. Just do not turn it into a minutes leaderboard. See reading streak to use the chain without sabotaging yourself.

When you miss

You will miss. The rule is simple: never two days in a row. One missed day is an accident. Two becomes the new normal. The next day, hit the minimum and move on.

Four weeks

  • Week 1: four pages a day, same time.
  • Week 2: add the feed block during the reading window.
  • Week 3: keep everything the same. Do not raise the goal.
  • Week 4: if four pages became easy, go to eight.
